Aromatherapy workshops

The science and applications of aromatherapy

This is a more advanced workshop, where we will look at the chemical constituents of different essential oils (including how they can vary), and how they may affect our mind and body.

We will explore how we can use this knowledge to make a more informed choice of which oils to use in specific circumstances, paying attention to contraindications and cautions.

Carrier oils are often overlooked in aromatherapy massage training, so we will investigate this for ourselves with simple experiments to see how their smell, feel and appearance make an important contribution to our overall experience of an aromatherapy treatment.

Using the skills and knowledge you have acquired throughout the day, you will have the opportunity to make an organic massage oil or skincare product for a specific purpose, to take away with you.

At the end of the day, you will have learned:

  • An in-depth knowledge of the chemical constituents of some carrier and essential oils;
  • How the composition and quality of essential and carrier oils can vary;
  • The importance of understanding when an oil should not be used, or used cautiously;
  • How to apply this knowledge to give you confidence in your choices of oils;
  • How to make a product to suit a specific purpose.

You will also receive:

  • A certificate of attendance;
  • Your own massage oil or skincare product developed for a specific purpose;
  • A complimentary Purely Skincare apron.

What do I need to know?

We suggest that you have some prior knowledge of aromatherapy to make the best of this workshop, such as completion of Introduction to aromatherapy, or another form of learning or experience.

It is ideal for aromatherapists and massage therapists who would like to know more about the science of oils.

You can receive 5 Continuing  Professional Development (CPD) points with the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) for attending the workshop. You can gain further points by using the experience to, for example, write a reflective piece of work relating to your practice, a case study, or a business or marketing plan . Please check with your own professional body to check how many CPD points you will be eligible for.

What do I need to bring?

We will provide all the equipment and ingredients you will need for the day. We have small tables to work on and there are ample chairs for resting or chatting at break times.

A notepad and pen will be useful. Although we will be providing materials for you to take home, it is always a good idea to jot down a few notes to remind yourself what, how or why you did something!

You are welcome to bring a packed lunch, or you can visit one of our local cafes. We will provide refreshments, so please let us know if you have any allergies, intolerances or dislikes.

We would advise that you wear comfortable shoes and clothes, as we may be standing, stirring and mixing for a while. Although you will be wearing an apron, we will be working with oils, so don’t wear your favourite clothes!

We endeavour to ensure that all our workshops are fully inclusive, so if you have any concerns about your ability to participate in our workshops, please contact us on before you book, so we can discuss your queries.
